I wasn't sure what I wanted my first shrine to be. I have so many hobbies and interests and considering that I started this site to show off my pixel art and perler beads, those two should be the first to cover, right?.
Well I did part of that, the pixel art is very much present here, but the perler beads not so much. And yet I couldn't help but think it should be Pokémon that I dedicate this first shrine to. It was Pokémon that got my love for all things Japan started. It was wat got me into anime, into gaming and all the way to perler beads and pixel art.
So, to honour that, here is my first shrine, dedicated to Pokémon. And especially cute, pink Pokémon!
Love,
Joisu a.k.a. Twice The Pixels
p.s. this shrine is still under construction!
Pokémon is a Japanese media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri, encompassing video games, animated series and films, a trading card game, and other related media. The franchise takes place in a shared universe in which humans co-exist with creatures known as Pokémon, which are primarily caught and raised by Pokémon Trainers to battle each other for sport. The franchise's target audience is children aged 5 to 12,but has garnered fans of all ages.
The contracted term Pokémon derives from a syllabic abbreviation of the franchise's full name, Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā). When the franchise began to be released internationally, the short form of the title was used, with an acute accent (´) for pronunciation.
Pokémon refers both to the franchise itself and the creatures within its fictional universe. As a noun, it is identical in both the singular and plural, as is every individual species name; it is grammatically correct to say "one Pokémon" and "many Pokémon", as well as "one Pikachu" and "many Pikachu". In English, Pokémon may be pronounced either /'powkɛmon/ (poe-keh-mon) or /'powkɪmon/ (poe-key-mon).
The franchise originated as a pair of Game Boy titles, Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green, released in Japan in February 1996. The games were commercial successes, and were released internationally as Pokémon Red and Blue from 1998. With the concurrent debut of the animated series, Pokémon became a global phenomenon, and is estimated to be the world's highest-grossing media franchise and one of the best-selling video game franchises.
The franchise is owned by The Pokémon Company (TPC), a joint venture established in 1998 by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures. Game Freak develops the core series role-playing games, which are jointly published by Nintendo and TPC exclusively for the former's consoles, while Creatures manages the trading card game and related merchandise, occasionally developing spin-off titles. The Pokémon anime series and films are co-owned by Shogakukan. Since 2009, The Pokémon Company International (TPCi) subsidiary of TPC has managed the franchise in all regions outside of Asia.
Pokémon has been a part of my life almost as long as I can remember. When the anime first began airing on Dutch tv's I had no clue what an anime was, but I knew that I liked it a lot! Samurai Pizza Cats, Super Pig, Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon and Pokémon were my biggest obsessions. With Pokémon on top.
I can still vividly remember the day I got a Charizard TCG card. I was literally screaming in the store where I had bought the pack seconds ago, and ripped it open before we were even out the door. My mom annoyed by my outburst, tried to get me to stop screaming, not knowing I had just won the child's equivalent of a SUPER JACKPOT. I was hysterical and eventhough I gave away most of my Pokémon cards during my teens, I kept the Charizard. And still have it to this day.
But there are tons of memories like these. From playing for cards during school breaks to almost hitting my sister in the face with a remote control because she accidentally deleted my Pokémon save file, just after I had gotten a Lapras. I would sit on the couch for hours, trying to break my personal Pokémon Pinball record. Or try to beat my mom in Lickitung Sushi in Pokémon Stadium. I remember getting Pokémon birthday cakes and convincing my parents to get me every single Pokémon plushie there was (and failing haha).
Besides the games I have a lot more Pokémon stuff! Throughout the years I've collected tons of Pokémon merhandise and also thrown out tons. Especially in me early teens when I was "too cool" for Pokémon. It was then that I also gave away all my cards for example. Which I thoroughly regret to this day. Thankfully I did keep some stuff and have managed to collect a bunch again.
I even got some of the original cards back and went through a period of collecting acvitely again, but have stopped with the TCG cards now. Purely in favor of other hobbies. I have to make choice somewhere. Now I mainly stick to the games, plushies and figures. And I also cannot say no to any old toys, crafting kits, boardgames and other vintage items if I come across them at flea markets.
All in all I have a ton of merch that I'd love to share with you all on here. But that'll have to wait a little bit longer as taking and editting the pics to put them on here is going to take some time (and to find some motivation to actually do it. So those will be following later. For now you can find some of it on my personal instagram if you're really curious
More Pokémon content, including my favorite Pokémon is coming soon!
These are all the Pokémon Pixel sprites I've collected throughout the years. Wherever possible I've linked them back to the original makers. However, there are a few I couldn't find so if you know, or if you are the original maker, please let me know where to link these back to!
Don't forget to read the rules before you save or share any of these! ☆
The Pokémon sprites below are sorted by makers. Including a couple of "old legends" like MewHeart. But also some recent pixel artists who have shown their love for Pokémon through a ton of different Pokémon pixel work, such as Kattling and Citric Lilly
